Mrs. (Julia) Alma Leftwich Mathis, 77, of Atlanta died March 17, 1997. She was born in Lynchburg, VA but was reared in Montgomery, AL and later moved to Atlanta. Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Mr. Philip Jack Mathis in 1994 and her son Philip Bruce Mathis in 1985. She attended the University of Alabama and then worked with the Federal Communications Commission. She was a charter member of Wieuca Road Baptist Church, where she was a member of S.T.A.R. Sunday School Class, WMU and taught Training Union. She was past president of the Sandy Springs women's Club where she was nominated for Mother of the Year and was very active in the PTA She was also a member of Ft. Peachtree N.S.D.A.R. and Atlanta Post-Polio Association. She enjoyed traveling with friends and family throughout the world. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Susan and John Hudson; son and daughter-in-law, Samuel A. and Martha Mathis; daughter-in-law, Florence Mathis and Jeff Holmes; sister Rose Neville, Montgomery, AL; grandchildren Amanda L. Mathis, Courtney A. Hudson, Philip W. Hudson, William J. Mathis and Donna J. Mathis; three nieces and three nephews. Services will be held Thursday, March 20, 1997 1 p.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel, Dr. William L. Self will officiate. Interment, Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt. Vernon Highway.
