Gomer H. Condit

Gomer H. Condit, 80, of Boise, died of a heart attack on Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at a Boise hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Alden-Waggoner Chapel. Elders Jim Jester and Charles Vreeland of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will preside. Burial will follow in Morris Hill Cemetery.

Gomer was born Jan. 25, 1917, at Hagerman, Idaho, the son of Silas and Reveria Condit. He graduated from Hagerman High School and attended Graceland College. He graduated from the University of Idaho with a civil engineering degree.

Gomer worked for Morrison Knudsen on Wake Island on the design of a U.S. airfield when he was captured by the Japanese. He was a prisoner of war for four years. When he was released and returned to the states, he married Virginia Reed Wilson of Boise in 1945. They were married 45 years and enjoyed camping and traveling with their children, Karen, Scott and Reed, until Virginia's death.

Gomer started his civil engineering career with Idaho Power Co. in 1947. His responsibilities included the design and construction of 11 of Idaho's 16 hydroelectric dams and two steam plants. The hydro dams included the Lower Salmon, Upper and Lower Malad, Strike, Bliss, Brownlee, Oxbow, Hells Canyon, American Falls, Brownlee Five and Cascade dam.

His involvement with steam plants included Valmy, a joint venture with Sierra Pacific in Nevada and the Jim Bridger steam plant, joint ventures with Pacific Power and Light in Rock Springs, Wyo. Gomer worked on the Rapid River and Pahsimeroi fish hatcheries. He was the liaison for Idaho Power in the nuclear power studies at INEL in Arco, Idaho.

He concluded his 35-year career as the vice president of power plant construction. Following his retirement he was a consulting engineer working in Russia, China, Japan, Africa, and Alaska.

Gomer loved to hunt and fish, and enjoyed helping to build the RLDS Church Camp in Cascade, where happy reunions were held for many years. He was devoted to his church work and preached throughout the parishes in Idaho, serving as a high priest.

Gomer married Joan B. Wall of Boise on July 26, 1991. They were married 5½ years until the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Condit of Boise; daughter, Karen and son-in-law, David Reyes of Meridian and their children, Angela, Cody and Danny; sons, Scott and Reed Condit; granddaughter, Andrea Condit and grandson, Mathew Hurst; stepdaughters, Linda Eskridge and husband, Tom, Susan Wall, and Janice Gilman, all of Boise. He is also survived by step-granddaughters, Sariah Gilman and Karen Eskridge; and brother-in-law, Steven Jones and wife, Sandy and their two children, Jason and Drew of Boise. He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Reveria Condit; his wife, Virginia; and two sisters, Doris Stokes and Teresa Sharp.

My deepest gratitude to the St. Alphonsus Coronary Care Unit for their valiant efforts to save Gomer's life.
