He was born January 25, 1923 in Cokeburg, PA, moved to Lorain at age 1 and settled in Sheffield Township in 1935.
Paul attended Holy Trinity Parochial School and Clearview High School. He served with the US Army in the 44th infantry division, 71st infantry regiment, 3rd battalion, Company L and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic action at Gros Rederching, France. He also earned 3 Battle Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and Good Conduct Medal. Paul worked at Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company for 38 years and retired in 1983 as plant shift supervising engineer.
Paul was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain where he served on church council, was president of council for 15 years, served as an usher for 30 years, was a member of the Holy Name Society and served as chairman of the church's 75th anniversary celebration. He had recently joined St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township. A lifelong member of the First Catholic Slovak Union Branch #228 St. John/Holy Trinity, Paul served as president as well as all other offices over the years. He was a member of the National Slovak Society Assembly #160 and served as its auditor.
Paul was a member of the American Slovak Club in Lorain for 50 years and was a current member of its Board of Directors, served as auditor, secretary and, most recently, maintenance manager. He was a member of the American Legion. He was one of the original founding members of the Sheffield Township Fire Department and was looking forward to the opening of the new fire station. Paul served as south precinct committeeman and on the Democratic Board and Township Board of Appeals for many years. An original member of the Clearview High School class of 1942, Paul was awarded his diploma with the class of 2003 through a program set up to award diplomas to those that had to leave school early to serve their country in WWII. Paul enjoyed frequent trips to Arizona and fishing trips to Canada over a 35-year period.
He is survived by his sons Ronald P. of Lorain and Jeffery J. (Patricia) of Ashland, grandchildren, Zachary L. of Lorain, Zebulon P., Caleb (Erin), Cody A., Tirzah A., Miriam E., Anna G., and Olivia P., all of Ashland, great granddaughter Sylvia Bryn, brothers John (Frances) of Lorain and Andrew (Jean) of Sheffield Village and sisters Susan (Alfred) Lehman of Harrisburg, PA, Catherine (Andrew) Brest of Phoenix, AZ, Mary (James) Mauro of Harrisburg, PA, Margaret Haller of Homestead, FL and Agnes of Boston, MA.
He was preceded in death by his wife Judy E. (nee Brigant), parents Charles and Susan (nee Madansky), brothers Charles and Joseph and sisters Anna Zadorozny and Pauline Kudrin.
The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 N. Ridge Rd., Elyria Twp. The Rev. James Ols, pastor, will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
