Baptized Johann Christoph Heinrich Schwark at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waldenburg in 1861.

John and his brother in Washington both changed the spelling of the family name to Schwarck. The generation before and after, and other siblings, spelled it Schwark. All of his male children used the original Schwark spelling.
