Noted Shreveport ophthalmologist. Co-founder of the Steen-Hall Eye Institute at Willis-Knighton Medical Center in Shreveport, LA.

A pioneer of many firsts in ophthalmology, Dr. William H. Steen, Jr., age 71, passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2010.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 4th, at First United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Pat Day of First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held following the service at the church.

Dr. Steen was a native and lifelong resident of Shreveport, LA. He served as a Flight Surgeon, in the United States Army during Vietnam and received two Purple Hearts, the Air Medal, the Bronze Star and Silver Star. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Centenary College, Shreveport, LA where he was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta Honor Society. He also received a Masters Degree in Marine Biology at the University of Miami, FL. Dr. Steen went on to attend medical school at Louisiana State University in New Orleans and served his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Following his residency, he joined the medical staff at Willis-Knighton in 1970. During his distinguished career, he set the pace for innovative eye care in the Ark-La-Tex. He was the first ophthalmologist worldwide to perform a living, sighted, human eye implantation of the Optical Radiation Corporation U780A MemoryLens in 1990. For more than 20 years, Steen contributed to the profession of ophthalmology through publications and lectures. He was also avid about learning new procedures and investigating new technology. Dr. Steen served as vice-president of the Shreveport Eye Foundation from 1977 to 1995 and was secretary-treasurer of the Louisiana Eye Foundation from 1988 until 1995.

Dr. Steen was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Steen and Laura Elizabeth Fletcher Steen of Shreveport.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Morris Steen; his sons, Kerry Steen and his wife, Sharon of San Antonio and their children, Ashley, Haley and Zachary; and William W. Steen of York, PA. He is also survived by his sister, Marguerite Steen; niece, Carolyn Kaltenbach; nephews, Ed and John Kaltenbach, all of Albuquerque, NM; his beloved personal assistant, Sue Scholzen; and many close friends.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, First United Methodist Church of Shreveport, the Orchid Society, or the American Heart Association in memory of Dr. Steen's father.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Life Air and the doctors and staff of LSU Medical Center.
