Evie (rhymes with Chevy) was the daughter of William and Lizzie McPhedridge. She was the first of her descendants to attend college at what was then Kirksville Normal School. Several of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have since attended the same school, now Truman University. On January 1, 1896 she wed Jacob David Shafer, Jr. in Adair County, Missouri. They were the parents of four daughters and two sons, one who died in infancy.
