His Mother died when he was about age 9. Grandpa wasn't aware of his birth date. He picked out a birth day for himself. He and his sister Hazel were taken in by a children's home before being put on a train and sent from Cabarrus county, NC to Caldwell county and the Coffey family. His birth name was Hathcock/Hethcock/Heathcock.
