A lot of people on ancestry seem to think Samuel was born in a place called Scotts, Alexander Co, NC. Their is no Scotts town in Alexander Co, NC, but there is a Scotts in Iredell Co, NC, 2.7 miles WNW of Stony Point, NC. Alexander County was not even formed until 1846. In 1746 (Samuel's birth year) the whole area of present day Alexander, Iredell, Rowan, and Anson Counties was in Bladen County, and not many settlers in the area at the time.

Samuel's grandparents were John Weisen (b.ABT 1700 Londonderry, Ireland, d.7/?/1777 in Rowan Co, NC) and Mary Deemer. They had two known sons, Archibald Wasson (b. between 1714 and 1719 in Glencastle, Ireland) and Joseph E. Weisen (b. 1718, d. AFT. 6/16/1794 in Iredell Co, NC ). Joseph E. Weisen was Lt. Samuel Washington Wasson's father (mother unknown).

Samuel W. Wasson was a Lieutenant from Salisbury District, NC during the Revolutionary War.

He married at least three times:
1st wife: Elizabeth Lowrence/Lowrance (born ?/?/1754 Rowan Co, NC) married sometime between 1767 and 1776. John A. Sands, in his book, "Wasson" published 1976, states that Samuel was first married to a woman named Elizabeth, maiden name unknown. John A. Sands was a prosperous farmer and slave-holder, and apparently a well-respected man in the County of Lawrence, Tennessee.
2nd wife: widow Catherine Epson Abel, married in 1779.
3rd wife: widow Catherine Boyd McConnell, married in 1802 in Iredell Co, NC. She was born ABT 1761 in MO, married first to Alexander Mcconnell on 2/18/1782 in Iredell Co, NC). Catherine was a daughter of Capt. Robert Boyd. She brought seven children to the marriage of Samuel from her prior marriage to Alexander McConnell: Anne (1783/4), Walter (1784), Robert (1787), William (1789), Elizabeth, John B. (1794), and Mary Ann 'Polly' (1798). All of Samuel's children by the first and second wives were already grown. Alexander McConnell (b. 1750 PA, d. 8/9/1798 Iredell Co, NC) was a son of William McConnell (1720–1777, m. 1739 Pennsylvania) and Nancy Jane Coles (1720–1787).

After the turn of the century, Samuel Wasson began selling off his Iredell Co, NC holdings, then he, Catharine, and family (with all the known surviving McConnell children: Ann Bell, Walter, William (m. Elizabeth Bone), John, Robert Boyd and Mary Ann) moved to Williamson Co, TN, south of Nashville, near her Boyd kin, possibly via Sumner and Wilson Counties, TN. The Wasson family holdings in Tennessee also included land that appears to have overlapped into Rutherford and Giles Counties. They lived in Iredell Co, NC from 1770-1800 (TN fed cencus) and was in Williamson Co, TN in 1807 (TN state census). They eventually settled in Maury County, TN, possibly near the community of Bigbyville. In 1800 Samuel is listed as a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church that was in the present day area of Godwin, TN, just north of Columbia. His will is recorded June 16, 1826 in Maury Co, TN.

Mary Lee Harris, Donie Mitchum, and Elliot J Sheeks expanded the group in Tennessee, Texas, and Arkansas.
