Samuel was the son of Ross Porter and Mary Ann (Barnes) Shinkle. He was the husband of Lena "Leota" Ryle. He was the father of George Elkin, Henry Greyson "Fritz", William Porter, Bolivar, Mary Leota, Charles Manford, Lena, Samuel Leslie, Blanche and a stillborn son, John and an unnamed stillborn boy

Sam and Leota's grave marker is at the far east side of the cemetery between the road and fence. Their daughter Mary and son-n-law Wallace Clore are also included on the marker. There are no dates for any of them.
