Aaron Selber Sr. Dies; Services are Thursday
Aaron Selber Sr., 72, vice chairman of the board of Selber Bros., died yesterday at 9 a.m. of heart failure at a Houston hospital after a long illness. He had been at the Houston hospital for a week.
He was born Feb. 15, 1896, at Baton Rouge and was the third son of the late Charles and Mary Selber. He was educated at Shreveport's Central High School and Draughon's Business School.
He joined his brothers, Isadore, Louis and Mandel, in the family business in 1919 following his release from the armed forces. The original Selber store was at 227 Texas St. and was founded in 1907 by Charles Selber.
Mr. Selber was named vice chairman of the board in February and had served as executive vice president of Selber Bros. seven years before that.
He was a member of B'nai Zion Temple, the Elks, the American Legion, Forty and Eight La Societe and Voiture 137. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Petroleum Club.
He served as the only president of the 40 & 8 Club, Inc.; Sous Chef de Chemin de Fer; Cheminot Nationale on the club's executive committee; Chef de Gare Locale, two terms; Grand Cheminot member; Cheminot Locale numerous times; chairman of the 40 & 8 Chateau building committee here, and chairman of the house and grounds committee of Voiture Locale No. 137 for many years.
He served on the American Legion executive committee numerous times, served on many local, state and national Legion committees and this year was elected vice commander of the American Legion Fourth District.
He was a past director of the Chamber of Commerce, Norwela Council of Boy Scouts and B'nai Zion Temple.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Dreyfuss Selber; two sons, Aaron Selber Jr. and Leonard Selber, both of Shreveport; a daughter, Mrs. Bernard Goldstein of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Louis Selber of Shreveport; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Rosenthal of Shreveport and Mrs. Shelley Coleman of Dallas, Tex.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the B'nai Zion Temple by Rabbi David Lefkowitz Jr. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery by Rose-Neath Funeral Home with the American Legion conducting graveside rites.
Pallbearers will be Irving Selber, Mandel Selber Jr., Alvin Willer, Harry Folloder, Jules Dreyfuss, Albert Dreyfuss Jr., Albert Kelly, Sam Vedlitz, Alvin Golman, Arnold Miller, Leonard Vedlitz, Jack Selber and Chuck Selber.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be sent to the Aaron Selber Sr. Memorial Fund, Local Voiture No. 137, Forty and Eight, P.O. Box 180, Shreveport.
Note: Originally buried in the B'Nai Zion Section of Greenwood Cemetery, Plot 272-3. Transferred to Forest Park Cemetery in March 2000.
