Norman Elwood Hammer, 81, of Elkton, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Avante in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Hammer was born May 30, 1929, in Rockingham County to the late Willis Showalter and Maude Rexrode Hammer.

Mr. Hammer was a member of the Lighthouse Gospel Church in Stanley. He was an independent truck driver for a number of years and retired from Mason Dixon Trucking Co.

On Nov. 4, 1950, he married Lena Meadows Hammer, who preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Freddy Hammer and wife, Darlene, and Russell Hammer and wife, Debbie, all of Elkton; a daughter, Shirley M. Dean and husband, Shirley R.; half brother, Willis Hammer Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; half sister, Charlotte Notzelman of Stephens City; four grandchildren, Sandy Life, Chad Hammer, Shannon Hammer and Brian Hammer; five great-grandchildren, Eric and Dakota Life, Blaze, Olivia and Grayson Hammer; and one great-great-grandchild, Tori Life.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at the Lighthouse Gospel Church in Stanley with the Rev. Earl Painter and the Rev Nona F. Allen officiating. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery. The casket will remain closed.

Friends may call at his home at any time.
