Hans Madsen Funk was born on the 15th of May in Eskesgård, Pedersker, Bornholm, Denmark, and christened at St. Peters church in Pedersker, Bornholm, Denmark on the 12th of June 1839. Hans married Christena Swenson in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City on the 27th of December 1864. They had 7 children, but none of them survived past the age of 18. Hans and Christena were one of the founding families of the town of Weston, Idaho.

Hans married Anna Sophia Peterson on the 24th of May 1869 in the Endowment House. Hans and Sophia had 3 children, George who died as an infant, and Annie and Mina.

Hans married Anna Elizabeth Larsen on the 15th of December 1881.

Hans served several missions for the LDS Church, and also served as the Bishop of Newton from March 1884 until his death in 1892.
