Pioneer Ada Businessman Died Last Thursday. Julius Ahlers, one of Ada's pioneer merchants, passed away last Thursday morning at a Minneapolis hospital, following an operation for bladder and kidney trouble. The operation is said to have been successful, but the organs failed to operate properly resulting in his death. The remains were brought to Ada, and funeral services were held last Saturday afternoon at 2 pm at the family home and at 2:30 pm at the Methodist Church. Ada business houses were closed during the services out of respect for the deceased. The church was filled to overflowing by relatives and the many friends of the deceased. Rev. Boone, of the First Methodist Episcopal Church and Rev. Gausman of the German Methodist Church conducted the services, both preaching in English. There was special music and the floral offerings were beautiful. The remains were interred in the Ada cemetery. The deceased has been one of Ada's foremost and most highly respected citizens since he came here in 1882. He has served the city as mayor, city councilman and in other capacities and could have had further honors of a political nature had he so chosen. Until almost the end, he appeared to enjoy splendid health and although he was 71 years of age, he attended to business constantly. In appearance, he seemed like a well preserved man of 55 or 60, and few knew of his internal ailment which affected him for several years and gradually grew worse. The operation was of a serious nature, but a fatal termination was not anticipated, so his death was a painful surprise to the whole community. The deceased leaved to mourn his death, his wife, two daughters, Mrs. C. J. Lofgren of Ada, and Mrs. M.A. Hegge, of Williston N.D. and one son, C.R. Ahlers of Ada. To these and other relatives, the people of Ada and vicinity extend heartfelt sympathy. Julius Ahlers was born in Berlin Germany, April 4, 1848, being 71 years, 6 months and 5 days of age at the time of his death. He was united in marriage Sept 24, 1868 to Bertha L. Hillig, at Hay Creek, Goodhue County, Minn., and resided at Red Wing until September, 1882, when Mr. and Mrs. Ahlers came to Ada, the former engaging in the general mercantile business with Mr. Meyers. Later on he purchased Mr. Meyers' interest.
