Martha married Dr. Joseph Barnard in 1862 and was the mother of at least four children, including the noted sculptor George Grey Barnard. The family lived in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, before settling in Madison, Indiana, 1883. She was a daughter of George Grey Grubb, of the Grubb family of Grubb's Landing, Delaware.

Joseph and Martha were the parents of the noted sculptor George Grey Barnard, who created the lovely Italian marble monument "Let There Be Light" placed near their grave.
