William E. Backus

William Earl Backus, 76, of Middleport, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 1994 at Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Born May 7, 1917 in Vaughan, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Russell and Sylvia Gail Blackburn Backus. He was a retired boiler operator with A.M. International Inc.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Alberta Pettit Backus of Middleport; a daughter, Darlene Backus of Cincinnati; two daughters and sons-in-law, Helen Gail and Daniel Reed of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Geraldine and Larry Lahna of Coshocton; a son, Deleraine Backus of St. Petersburg, Fla., eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Clark of Millfield, Virginia Tate of Cheshire, and Maxine Leavey of Columbus; three brothers, Earnest Backus, Mogadore, Ohio, Emmit Backus of Columbus, and Raymond Rupe of Winter Park, Fla.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Fisher Funeral Home in Middleport, with the Rev. Lamar O'Bryant officiating. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
