Peter Carmichael, one of the best known citizens of the south part of the county, died at his home in Harrodsburg Monday morning at 7:30 o'clock. He was a native of North Carolina, but moved to Harrodssburg when quite a young man, where he spent the balance of his life. He was a man held in the highest regard by the community and raised a large family, all of whom are well known. He was the father of Richard, Taylor, and James Carmichael, and of Mrs. William Lowe, Mrs. Dr. James Dodd, Mrs. Calvin Stephenson and Mrs. David Kinser.

The Harrodsburg Enterprise says of Peter Carmichael, who died at that place last week:

He was associated with the late J. D. Ormey in the dry goods business for many years. He came to this county with his parents from North Carolina in 1827. In an early day he hauled goods from New Albany to this place. He was instrumental in a large degree in building up and making Harrodsburg and vicinity what it is. In 1837 he was married to Lydia Tague, who survives him. He also leaves three sons and four daughters. The funeral was preached at the M. E. church by Rev. Walls of Bedford. His remains were buried with Masonic honors at the town cemetery, a large number of that fraternity from Bloomington, Bedford and Stanford being present. Uncle Peter was a member of the M. E. church since he was 30 years of age. He was always kind and sympathetic, ready to lend a helping hand to his more unfortunate fellow travelers. He was of a jovial nature, and to know Uncle Peter was to love him.
