J.R. was a lifelong resident of Gainesville, born on February 6, 1928. He served in the United States Navy from 1947 - 1950 as a Seaman Second Class, on the U.S.S. Coral Sea Aircraft Carrier. He then went on to work for the University of Florida as an electrician and retired in 1991 with 41 years of service. J.R. was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and moved his letter to Parkview Baptist Church in 1964. He was also a member of the Gainesville Masonic Lodge #41 as well as a member of the Morocco Shriners Temple in Jacksonville, FL. J.R. enjoyed spending time with his family, NASCAR and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. "Chick" and Nellie Neal, his sisters Charlotte A. Neal, Earnesteen N. Carrell, Alice L. Langill and brother Dalton M. Neal. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Winnie L. Neal and three children - Tammy Neal and her husband Joey Lott, Jan Randall Neal and his wife Amy and Linda Neal. He is also survived by three grandchildren - Jennifer Leeanne Rogers (23), Julia Ray Neal (17) and Austin Lane Neal (10).
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 27, 2010 from 1:30 - 3:00 pm at the Milam Funeral Home Chapel located at 311 S Main Street, Gainesville. Services will directly follow at 3:00 pm in the Chapel with a committal service at Forest Meadows East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Haven Hospice 4200 NW 90th Blvd. Gainesville, FL 32606 or Parkview Baptist Church 3403 NW 13th St. Gainesville, Florida 32609.
