Assistant Surgeon (and First Lieutenant), 7th US Cavalry. Attached to Custer's column, he was killed in the Battle of the Little Big Horn, with General Custer.

The adopted son of the Rev. Thomas N. Lord, who moved to West Auburn, Maine, where he grew up. Attended Lewiston Fall Academy and graduated from Bowdoin College with a BA in 1866. Entered Chicago Medical School and graduated in March 1871. Entered medical service on 27 April 1871 at Fort Ripley (St. Paul, Minn.). At Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, from May 1872. Arrived at Fort Lincoln, ND, on 20 May 1874 and participated in the Black Hills Expedition. Appointed Assistant Surgeon, with a rank of First Lieutenant on 26 June 1875 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Served at Fort Buford, ND, until 14 May 1876, and attached for duty with 7th Cavalry. On 25 June 1876, he was suffering from indisposition, and Custer suggested he remain with the pack train, but he refused and insisted on accompaning the Custer column, where he was killed. His medical bag was later found in the Indian village. He was buried on the battlefield on June 28, and exhumed in July 1877, for burial at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Cemetery (now called the Custer National Cemetery). Survived by his widow and his brother, 1st Lt Thomas William Lord.
