Harlan L. Adams, 82, of 2800 Thielman St., Merrill, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.

Harlan was born July 26, 1922, in Viroqua, son of the late Robert and Ethel (West) Adams. He married Joan Quilling June 15, 1945, in Menomonie. She survives.

Harlan served as a pilot during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. After the war, he continued to serve in the military reserves. Harlan was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He retired from the reserves in 1982 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. After W.W. II, Harlan completed his education at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he earned his degree in industrial education. He was a high school teacher for 38 years and coached basketball and tennis. He retired in 1984 from Merrill Senior High School after 29 years of service. Harlan was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Merrill, where he had served as an elder. He was an active member of the Merrill Evening Lions Club and was a member of the Silver M Club.

Survivors besides his wife, Joan, include three daughters, Ann (Don) Engelbrecht, Sue (Dick) DeHart and Jane (Jim) Hulke; one son, David (Libby) Adams; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A twin sister, Lorna Schaldach, precedes him in death.

The funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church, Merrill. The Rev. Donald King officiated. Entombment was in Merrill Memorial Park Mausoleum, where graveside military rites were conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1638-Merrill.
