He then moved to the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory where he had various occupations. In 1843 he furnished supplies to the garrison at Ft. Wichita; in 1845 he was an Indian Trader at Preston Bend. He then returned to Colbert Station where he operated a ferry system until 1850. He settled on Iron Ore Creek in Grayson Co, Tx where he conducted a steam grist and saw mill until 1852. In 1856 he moved to Hog Eye Prairie, Jack Co., Tx having traded his mill and farm for a stock of cattle he became a leading stockman, Ranger-Captain and citizen of the section along the line of Jack and Wise Co.
The Ranger Co. performed invaluable service in defending Wise and Jack Counties against the incursions of Indians and outlaws. He lived on the extreme edge of the exposed frontier and his large family of children were exposed to an isolated, crude environment but due to their strength they grew up to be substantial, honorable citizens.

In 1867 J.B. and his son E.P. drove 1000 head of cattle from Jack County, Texas to Abilene, Kansas.
