Matthew Cowan born in 1776 and died March 21, 1865. He was a Captain in the
War of 1812 at the Battle of New Orleans. The son of Ned Cowan one of the
'Longhunters who explored much of middle Tennessee
in 1769 with Uriah Stone, Robert Crockett (an older relative of Davy
Crockett), Kasper Mansker, Obadiah Terrell, Abraham Bledsoe and others. Mat
Cowan was a first cousin to General Andrew Jackson (President of the United
States).
Catron Trousdale born December 19, 1782 was the daughter of James Trousdale
was born in Scotland and became a North Carolina Captain in the
Revolutionary War under Francis Marion the swamp fox. James
was married to Elizabeth Dobbins Trousdale another of the eight children.
William Trousdale 1790-1872 was a military man who was elected Governor of
Tennessee in 1849. Catron and Matthew were married in Sumner County on March
8, 1800. The city of Gallatin is within what was once the Trousdale farm.
James Trousdale sold 491 acres for 490.00 for the city of Gallatin to be
built.
Two other sons of Matthew believed to be killed in the Civil War are
believed to be buried here.
First white man settled in these parts.

Mathew Cowen served as a Captain in the War of 1812. He served with the 3rd Regiment, West Tennessee Militia under the Command of Col. James Roulston. The Unit composing as part of Maj-General William Carroll's Division that was ordered into services for the protection of New Orleans. The dated services from the 13th day of November 1814 to the dated services of 13th May 1815.

The Tennessee Units defeated the British Military in the Battle for New Orleans. Captain Cowen's military records note that he was paid $2. a month for 6 months services ($24.) He also was given $102. for rations and his baggage travel for the rank of Captain. His military records show that his last name is spelled COWEN.
