Obituary – Mrs. John Dundas
Jane R. Gibbon was born in Toronto, Canada, May 25th, 1847 and died in Estherville, Iowa, April 14th, 1922, at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 20 days.
At the age of five years she came to the States with her parents and settled with them in Fillmore County, Iowa. Here they lived until she was about seventeen years old when they again moved, this time settling in Kossuth county, where she was united in marriage to John Dundas on April 7th, 1868. With her husband she resided on a farm in Kossuth county until 1893 when they moved with their family to Estherville where she has since made her home.
There were seven children born to this union. Three having died, one in infancy, one at the age of nine years, and Mrs. Anna Lewis at the age of 27 years. Mrs. Dundas is survived by the other four. They are: Frank Dundas, Mrs. Jennie Carroll, Mrs. Dora Hirth, wife of William Hirth, all of Armstrong and Mrs. Carrie James, wife of U. V. James of Estherville. Beside these children Mrs. Dundas is survived by twenty grand children and six great grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers, all living in Oregon.
While yet but a child, Mrs. Dundas was soundly converted and has been a consistent and faithful Christian throughout her life. For many years she has been a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal church and a regular member of the Bible Class of the Sunday school in the Methodist church. Mrs. Dundas was a very devoted friend, was always ready to attend any one sick or in trouble, never tired of being helpful and as a result was loved by her neighbors and will be sadly missed by her many friends.
Her husband having died during the year 1915 she has lived along for several years until her health failed to such an extent that it was not thought wise to allow her to live longer by herself, so a few months ago she was prevailed upon to give up her home and live with her children. She was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. U. V. James when she was taken sick the first of February and never recovered from that sickness. All of her children were with her when the end came.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal church on Sunday afternoon, April 16th. The body was buried beside that of her husband in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 19, 1922)
