The following provided by Find A Grave contributor, darren smith:

Olaf Carl Seltzer was born August 25, 1877 in Copenhagen Denmark. Despite living in some poverty during his early youth, he studied art for two years at the technical society institute in Copenhagen before immigrating to Montana with his mother Julia in 1892.
While in Montana, Seltzer road for several Montana cattle outfits, went to work for the railroad, and eventually became a locomotive repairman. He was very skilled and worked for the Butte, Anaconda and Pacific, and the Narrow Gauge Railroad located in Lethbridge and in Medicine Hat, Canada. He later returned to the Great Northern Railroad.
While in Lethbridge, Seltzer studied the Blood Tribe of the Blackfeet Nation and he constantly painted. He preferred western scenes and gained early recognition for his work.
He met Charlie Russell in Great Falls at Charlie’s birthday party in 1897 and they became lifelong friends. Olaf and Charlie often took sketching trips together, and they posed for each other’s paintings. Seltzer turned to art as a full-time career in 1920 and studied art across the country. Unlike Russell, Seltzer expanded the scope of his style, not focusing only on western art.
Seltzer’s mother Julia died in 1903 and is also buried in Great Falls.
Seltzer was commissioned by Dr. Philip Cole of Tarrytown, New York, who owned one of the largest Charlie Russell collections. He asked Seltzer to paint several pieces that would be included in the same collection with Russell’s.
Seltzer was then commission by Amelia Earhart after her friend, Dr. Philip Cole, displayed some of Seltzer’s painted pieces. She asked him to design envelopes to take on her record-setting in 1935 Honolulu to Oakland flight.
Seltzer painted a large mural for the Montana Grand Lodge at the Masonic Building in Helena which depicts the first Masonic meeting in Montana.
During WW 2 Seltzer put his machine experience back to work at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls.
Seltzer died on December 16, 1957 in Great Falls, and is remembered as one of the leading western artists of his day.
