Valjean Williams' valiant spirit was released from his mortal body after fighting bravely the battle for years from heart problems, earning his crown of stars on Sept. 22, 2010.

Valjean was born to Arthur and Mary Hughes Williams July 14, 1927 in the old Milford Hospital. He spent his early life on the family farm in Milford, Utah, where he also graduated from high school.

He joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old. He served on the USS 127 BEGOR. Their duty included quarantining in the Pacific during the A Bomb testing.

Valjean married Martha Ellen Carlton on Feb. 25, 1950. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.

Valjean gave service to this family by working at whatever was necessary to care for them in their early life. He made a career and retired from the Union Pacific Railroad.

He served completely faithful in his many church callings. He was Scout Master of Orem 30th Ward having 30 boys and 13 Eagle Scouts in a three year period. He always loved scouting and moved up to teaching the Squaw Peak District future leaders.

He served on the High Council as welfare specialist and served as High Priest Quorum President and numerous positions.

He had a full life and was greatly respected by those who came under his influence. He was a wonderful example of hard work and service to all. He never shirked from any task. He bottled green beans, fruit, and pickled beets from his and his wife's garden for his children and grandchildren even up to this summer.

Valjean is survived by his wife; four children, Terrance S. (Susanna B.), Robyn A, Valerie Jean (Rudy) Preston and Candice E. Williams; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, a sister and a granddaughter.

The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Asay and the many caregivers involved in his health throughout the years.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010 at the Sharon Park Stake Center, 85 East 700 North, Orem. Friends may call at Berg Mortuary of Orem, 500 North State Street, Monday evening from 6 until 8 and at the church Tuesday from 11:30-12:45 p.m. prior to services.

Interment, Orem City Cemetery.
