From the Emporia Gazette, January 9, 1905:

John McMillan, one of Emporia's oldest and most respected citizens, died this morning at 4:50, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dora Rogers, 527 Sylvan Street. Mr. McMillan was stricken with paralysis last Wednesday afternoon, and from the first the doctor gave no hope for his recovery.

John McMillan was born at Rochester, N.Y. May 23, 1818, of Scotch parents [Thomas Morrison McMillan and Elizabeth K. Robertson], being the oldest of ten children. Two brothers and one sister survive him. Rev. William McMillan is paster of the First Presbyterian Church of Allegheny, Pa., the other brother, George, lives in Washington, Iowa, and the sister, Mrs. Lizzie Nebergall, lives in Des Moines, Iowa.

At the age of 18, he commenced to teach school, and in 1840, he married one of his pupils, Sara A. Harris, at Iberia, Ohio. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McMillan. They are Mrs. George Johnson, wife of the ex-County Treasurer Johnson of Pike Township; T.E. McMillan of Emporia, ex-county commissioner; Harry E. McMillan, of Plymouth, Mary, who died in infancy, and Mrs. Dora Rogers. Mrs. McMillan died August 31, 1902, after sixty-two years of married life. They moved from Ohio to Washington, Iowa, when that state was yet a territory, and went through all the hardships incident to pioneer life. They improved a large farm on which they lived for twenty-eight years. They came to Emporia in 1871, and have lived here ever since.

In the early days of Ohio, he was one of those who befriended the escaping slaves who made their way north by way of the underground railway.
