U.S. Congressman. During World War I, he served in the Infantry of the U.S. Army. After the war, he graduated from Indiana University, in 1922, from the law department of the same university, in 1924, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Rensselaer, Indiana. He was the prosecuting attorney for the Indiana thirtieth judicial circuit, (1924-34). In 1935, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Congressman Frederick Landis, reelected to the Seventy-fifth Congress and to the next fifteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1969. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and later died in retirement at age 85.
