H. Colle Larsen, 93, of Little Rock and a resident of Parkway Village, died
peacefully at home Monday, June 19, 2006. He was born Jan. 17, 1913 in
Pascagoula, Miss., the third child of Marie Louise Grant Larsen and Barth Julian Larsen. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
Colle was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Pearl Marie Meginness Larsen; his parents; his sisters, Marie Larsen Winkelseth and Elsie Larsen Martin; niece, Marie Doswell; and nephew, Barth J. Larsen. He is survived by one brother, B. J. Larsen, Jr., of Pine Bluff, Ark.;
brother-in-law, Frank Martin of Parkway Village; nephews, Cleve Martin of
Sherwood, Ark., Jere Grant Larsen of Pascagoula, and Mike Larsen of Rockwall, Texas; nieces, Jean Rosenbaum of North Little Rock, Ark., Carol Duplechin of Lafayette, La., and Harolyn Markle and Emily Ruth Beardsley of Pascagoula.
Colle spent his formative years in Pascagoula. He received scholarships in
football, baseball, and track, and attended Perkinston Junior College before
leaving to work on a dredge in Texas and Louisiana. He joined the Navy in 1936. His first assignment was aboard the USS Chester, operating out of Long Beach, Calif. This ship and its naval inhabitants became his home and family for the next seven years. He was aboard the Chester, 100 miles out of Pearl Harbor, at the time Pearl Harbor was bombed Dec. 7, 1941. When he retired from the Navy in 1960 after serving during World War II and the Korean War, he held the rank of lieutenant commander. After his retirement, he returned to college and then taught in public schools in California for 14 years.
He and his wife Pearl lived in Hollywood, Calif., for the majority of their
married life, moving briefly to Oceanside, Santa Monica, and San Diego. They made their home in Lawton, Okla., prior to Pearl's death, and he then moved to Little Rock to be closer to his family. His wife Pearl is buried in her hometown of Isabel, S.D., where Colle will join her. Many of Pearl's relatives who were very devoted to Colle and Pearl still live in the South Dakota area.
