During the Civil War he joined a nine-month unit, Co H, 21st Regiment, NJ Infantry. The regiment was mustered in at Trenton on September 15, 1862 and transported by rail to Maryland. The regiment covered the laying of pontoon bridges during the battle of Fredericksburg, and later built roads in the area. Following the Mud March of January, 1863, the regiment served at Chancellorsville, Maryes Heights, Salem Heights, and Banks' Ford. The men were mustered out at Trenton June 19, 1863.
