Born in the portion of Union County, PA, that became Snyder County, PA to Henry Getz, a shoemaker, and Eve Catherine Specht Getz. At 29 years of age, Isaac was drafted as a private in "New" [1864] Co. "F" of the 49th PA Vol. Inf.

Before his mustering in, he married Caroline S. Smith on 1 May 1864. They would have 10 children together after the War.

The Regiment, formed at the start of the War, had lost many men as casualties and many more when their 3 year enlistments ended (including their Colonel who resigned his commission). The remaining men, and those who re-enlisted, were consolidated into four companies of veterans (Co. A - Co. D) and the other companies (Co. E - Co. K) were reformed with new men. [With the exception of Co. I (which was regularly enlisted), these new men were draftees. Co. K, from near Pittsburgh, arrived too late to see action.]

The 49th PA was part of the 3rd Bde, 1st Div, VI Corps. Isaac arrived around 23 Aug 1864 at Harper's Ferry (Bolivar Heights) for service with the Regiment in the Shenandoah Valley with Sheridan and the Army of the Shenandoah. His first major action would have been the Battle of Opequon (a.k.a. the 3rd Battle of Winchester).

He served with the regiment on the VI Corps' return to Petersburg, VA, and was present when the regiment saw action at Hatcher's Run, the breakthrough on April 2nd, the pursuit of the Army of Northern Virginia, and the Battle of Saylor's Creek. He was promoted to Corporal on 25 May 1865 and mustered out with his Company at the end of the War.

Isaac was a charter member of the Major William H. Byers Post, No. 384 (subsequently reorganized as Post No. 612), Department of Pennsylvania, G.A.R.

He received a pension until death in 1901,
