William Wiley was born in the Rocky River area of Cabarrus County, N.C. 16 June 1776. This area at the time was part of Mecklenburg Co. He and his wife Margaret Cromwell Wiley and some of their children with their families migrated to Lafayette County, Ms. in 1837 soon after the Chickasaw Indian Cession, which opened the area to settlers.
William's father, Capt. Oliver Wiley, had come to Cabarrus Co. from the Lancaster Co. area of Pennsylvania in the mid 1760's when he was about 25 years of age... The Wileys along with members of other Scottish families, had migrated to Pa. from Ulster (Northern Ireland) beginning in the 1720's and were mostly Presbyterians. In the 1740's the Wileys were members of the Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church near the boundary of Chester and Lancaster counties, Pa.
In 1768 or 1769 Oliver Wiley, Jr. married Mary Shelby, daughter of Moses Shelby... Oliver and Mary had 5 sons and 6 daughters and were active in the Rocky River Presbyterian Church in its early years. He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. Their children were: Oliver III, Evan Shelby, Isaac, Moses, William, Hannah, Mary (who married Robert Morrison), Jeanette, Eleanor, Isabella (who married Isaih [sic] Spears), and Margaret. Oliver Wiley, Jr. and his wife, Mary were both buried in Spears Cemetery near the Rocky River Church.
William Wiley married Margaret Cromwell 16 March 1798 in Cabarrus County, N.C. Their children (all born in Cabarrus Co.) were: Salina (md. George Morrow); Polly md. Adam Morrow; Sinda m. John Cromwell; Katherine; Clarinda md. Elias Rambo; and Oliver Harper Wiley md. Mary Ann "Polly" Miller. The family settled in Lafayette Co., Ms. 5 to 6 miles east of Oxford and became members of the Oxford Presbyterian Church a few months after it was organized in July 1837. In 1840 several members of this family, together with other members of the Oxford Church withdrew to organize Hopewell Presbyterian Church east of Oxford. William Wiley died in Lafayette Co. near Toccopola 27 Oct 1855. Margaret, his wife, died 18 Aug. 1852. Both were buried in Old Lebanon Cemetery, Lafayette Co., near Toccopola.
From this line of Wileys have come some of the outstanding leaders in Lafayette county as city officials, merchants, postal employees, and church leaders. They helped to develop Lafayette County into one of the leading cultural counties in Mississippi.
