Bio from the 'Buffalo Courrier' May 1905.--
Villeroy Balcom, Sr, for whom the town of Balcom was named, in Chautauqua Co., NY was one of the few Democrats who held office continuously for years under all changes of Administrations. He was born at Templeton, Mass, and came to Villanova, Chaut. Co. when quite young, and took up his first land in 1816, when there were only eleven families in the town. He was appointed Postmaster, Dec 14, 1826, and held the office for more than thirty years. He carried the first mails for one year from Fayette, now Silver Creek, to Cherry Creek, N.Y. on horseback. In 1831 he was commissioned by Gov. Throop as captain of a company he organized, the first in the town. He served a long time as Justice of the Peace and was elected Supervisor of the town eight times. His farm of over eight hundred acres he bought from the Holland Land Co., and part from the late Wm H Seward (Pres Lincoln's Secy of State), who met him in Buffalo, N.Y. to make out the transfer of the deeds etc. Mr Balcom did most of the land business for that section, drawing up the deeds, notes, mortgages, etc. In the Registry Office at Mayville, Chaut. Co., N.Y. are hundreds of deeds, written entirely by him. He was a staunch Democrat and was in correspondence with Samuel J. Tilden and other leaders of the party. He was urged to run for Congress but had no desire for public life. After his death his widow went to reside with her daughter Mrs Robert Nisbet, Hamilton, Ont. Canada. Other children were Mrs Annis Wright, Lake Mills, Pa., Mrs Mary Clarke, Russell, Pa., Mrs Caroline Ford, Mellett, S.Dakota, Mrs Fidelia (Balcom) Greene, Ellicottville, N.Y., Mr Villeroy Balcom, Jr South Dayton, N.Y., Mrs Sophronia Phillips, Sinclairville, N.Y.
