The son of Bernard "Barney" Hanneken and Catharina "Kate" Schleeper, John married Helena Pehm on 28 Apr 1896 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of at least 6 children.

Helena died 5 days after giving birth to their youngest child. The baby only lived for 1 day.

During his later years, John was a resident at Watson Nursing Home in Jerseyville, Illinois. He died there at the age of 88 years, 10 months and 17 days.

He was survived by 2 daughters, Anna Droege and Kate Hanneken of Meppen, Illinois; 3 sons, William Hanneken of Kane, Illinois, Bernard Hanneken of Meppen, John R. Hanneken of St. Charles; 14 grandchildren; and 1 half-sister, Mary Litzau of St. Louis.

The body was taken to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. It was then transported to the Imming Funeral Home in Brussels for the visitation.

John shares a stone with his daughter, Kate.
