Obituary: Theodore "Ted" Mitchell

Theodore "Ted" Mitchell, husband of Irene Hulse Mitchell, died at 16:48, Wednesday, 16/August/2000, Cottonwood Hospital, of Heart Failure.

Ted was born in Neola, Duchesne County, Utah, on 9 October 1921, to George Young and Lucy Hall Mitchell. He was the great grandson of Phineas Young.

Ted loved the Uintah Basin, and attended school in Roosevelt, Utah, graduating from Altera High School at Fort Duchesne. He competed in sports activities and was recognized for his ability in distance running, baseball, and basketball. After graduating from high school, he enlisted with eight other school chums from Roosevelt in the U.S. Army Air Corp., July 1940, and was trained in the "flying sergeant" program.

During this time he met and married Mildred "Mickey" Yvonne McKie, they had six daughters. They were later divorced.

He served in the U.S. Air Corp. during World War II. The family moved to Springville, Utah and Ted worked as, payroll manager, Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Company. When the U.S. Air Force became a separate branch from the U.S. Army Air Corp., he was asked to return to military service. During his Air Force career, he served in Japan, in the Far East Air Force Headquarters, under the command of General MacArthur, while there he received the Bronze Star. Sgt. Mitchell was the first Sergeant to instruct Air Science at Brigham Young University's newly established Air Force ROTC. He was later assigned to Bushy Park, England at General Eisenhower's Headquarters, in Teddington, England.

In the Philippines, he was at Cebu AF Base., Mactan Island. And served as Base Sergent Major. Ted was honored for his sports activities on the Air Force Softball team as pitcher, and the Air Force Boxing Team.

His last assignment was Air Force Recruiting Supervisor of the Mountain States, headquartered in Salt Lake City, where he retired from military service 28 February 1970. He married Irene Hulse (Mitchell) on 13 January 1969.

This marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on 13 August 1979. After retirement Ted and Irene lived in Magna, Utah where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was elected to the Magna City Council. He was asked to return as a retired Sergent instructor at Olympus High School in the Air Force Jr. ROTC program, and they moved to the Holladay area.

Ted later was employed as General Services Supervisor for the Department of Social Services, State of Utah, and lived near the Capitol at Trevi Towers in Salt Lake City, where he served in the Capitol Hill Ward Bishopric. Ted and Irene moved to Three Fountains in Murray, Utah approximately 10 years ago. They established IHM Realtors (Integrity*Honesty*Maturity). His church assignments have been many throughout the world, serving in the Scouting Programs, Sunday School, Military LDS Group leader and Servicemen's Coordinator, Branch Presidencies, High Priest Group Presidencies, stake callings and in the Capitol Hill First Ward Bishopric.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Irene Hulse Mitchell, six daughters: Terri Lynn Boren, Roy, Utah; Tamrya Yvonne(Bill) Rhodes, Hooper, Utah; Sheila Kay Kazlauckas, Palmyra, New York; Brenda Jean (Richard) Park, West Jordan, Utah; Deborah Ann Vetica, Morgan, Utah; and Shawna Rae (Nick) Penna, Roosevelt, Utah; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also, survived by three sisters: Lucy Evans, Orem, Utah; Eleanor Ihnen, Portola, California, and Genevieve (John) Shepherd of Mesa, Arizona, a sister-in-law, Louise Mitchell of Prescott, Arkansas, also brother and sister-in law, Dale M. and Ilene H. Anderson; parents of Brent and Cherie Anderson of Murray, Utah and Etta Troseth of Bear River City, Utah. Many nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, "Mickey", also Irene's parents, three sisters: Belle LaMar Odekirk, Marian Hansen Hall, Clara Perry, and four brothers George Jr., Donald, Lynn Earl, and John Arvil, a son-in-law, Leo Vetica and one granddaughter: Nicol Boren.

Funeral services will be 12 Noon, Saturday, 19 August 2000, Murray 23rd Ward, 755 East Three Fountains Drive(4960 South), under the direction of Cannon Mortuary. Friends may call Friday evening, 18/August/2000 from 6-8 p.m. at the Cannon Mortuary , 2460 East Bengal Boulevard (7600 South) and one hour prior to services at the Church. Burial will be Saturday with Military Honors at the Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 East 4580 South, Murray, Utah.
