Growing up in Bessemer, Alabama, she attended Huntington College where she earned a degree in English and drama. She married Walter Hope (Buz) Baxter, III on June 12, 1954, and was a full partner in their fifty years of marriage, supporting his distinguished military career with her special flair. Lila was a Texas Master Florist and will always be remembered for her love of all things colorful and growing. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Boerne and found great fulfillment in numerous other civic, social, and philanthropic organizations.
Lila was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by her daughter Maurie Baxter DeWitt, husband Robert and their daughter Julia; son Walter Hope (Bud) Baxter,IV, his son Rory and wife Linda; Scott Waldrop Baxter, wife Betsy and their son Will, and Rosemary Baxter Baker, husband Clif and their daughters, Emma and Sara. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Ellis Smith and husband Ron, and brother Walter Waldrop and wife Dru, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family offers special love and appreciation to Lila's cousin Patia Sandifer, her caregiver through her last months.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Boerne, Texas on Monday, August 23, 2010 at 2PM with inurnment to follow at the United States Air Force Academy at a later time. Lila's hope was that all in attendance at her service would be comfortable in wearing colorful attire, celebrating her love of flowers.
