Colorado City- Mamie May Hargrove, age 102, passed away on Friday, September 24, 2010 in Sterling City, Texas. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home. Graveside Service will be held on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at Spade Cemetery with Rev. Richard West officiating under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

Mamie was born to Joe C. and Alice Rebecca Brown Northcutt on October 27, 1907. Her mother died when she was only 10 years old. Her brothers were Needham, 9; Shorty, 7; and Abbie, 3. It was unusual in that day and time not to "parcel out" young children among relatives after the death of a parent. Joe Northcutt, Mamie's father, was determined to keep the family together, and with the help of Grandma and Grandpa Browne who lived in Loraine, not too far from the Northcutt farm at Lowe, The family was able to make it.

At the age of 10, Mamie became the "little matriarch." She learned to sew, making her first dress from an old bed sheet. At 10, Mamie wasn't very tall, but with the help of a wooden crate, she was able to see in the skillet and start making dinner at age 10. She cooked beans, cornbread, eggs, fried potatoes, and their home cured meat. Peanut butter and molasses with biscuits was the family dessert and treat. That diet, instead of "junk food," must have given them all strong teeth-as they each had their own teeth in all their lives. Until the day Mamie died, she still talked about taking care of "the boys" in her daily conversations at the nursing home. She now joins them in their heavenly home.
Mamie married Ross Hargrove when they were 18 and 19 years old, respectively. Brothers Shorty and Abbie came to live with them for several years. "Mimi", as she was called by grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a good help-mate. Mamie became an excellent seamstress, cook, and home-maker. She truly lived up to the scripture Proverbs 31:27-28.
"She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."

Mamie and Ross were married 76 years and had 2 children. One son, Robert F. Hargrove, preceded Mamie in death at the age of 57. Her husband, "Papa Ross," died at the age of 95. She is survived by a daughter, Doris and her husband, Bill McClellan; daughter-in-law Ouida Hargrove; grandchildren: Ross McKenney and wife, Sharon, Kregg McKenny and wife, Diana, Melei Hargrove Kelly and husband, Rob Kelly, Eric Hargrove and wife, Natasha, Tom Hargrove and wife, Cindy; great-grandchildren: Allen Burks, Chris McKenney, Krista McKenney, David McKenney, Will Kelly, Patrick Kelly, Ross Hargrove, Jadi Hargrove, Caitlynn Hargrove, Caroline Hargrove and Courtney Hargrove; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mamie and Ross were faithful church goers and enjoyed worshiping at both the Baptist and Methodist Churches in the Spade Community, and later on, in Colorado City.

At the age of 99 years, Mamie moved from the family home in Colorado City to the Sterling County Nursing Home where she received excellent, loving care from each nurse and caretaker. The family requests that anyone wishing to honor Mamie's memory, make contributions to either the First United Methodist Church, or the Sterling County Nursing Home.
