Simeon Levi Wells was born Compton 'Canada East' (English Quebec). He was the second of 17 children born to Mary Ann (Smith) Wells, born in Hatley, Quebec, and Simeon Stafford Wells born in Vermont. The family moved from Canada to Adams County Wisconsin in 1855 when Simeon Levi Wells was about 11 years old. He served as a Private in Co. E of the Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in the Civil War in 1864. He married Adeline Phillips Richardson of Sturbridge, Mass. on Nov 29, 1866 at Big Spring, Wisconsin where he was a school teacher.


They had 6 children: Dorothy "Dode" Laurinda, Nellie Adeline, Lucius Stafford (died age 8), Anna Louise (died age 20), Persis Amelia, and Harry Edward Wells. Simeon and his wife lived in Mauston, WI for the remainder of their lives. He sold agricultural implements there.


According to his death certificate, signed by his son in law, Dr. William Edwards who was married to Simeon's daughter, Persis, he died Dec 20, 1909 "Aged 65 years 8 months 6 days" (conflicts with grave marker information)
