Walla Walla Union Bulletin
JANE COFFMAN HOAG, 64, died Friday, September 28, 2001 at her home in Edmonds, Washington from complications of diabetes.

Jane was born on August 7, 1937 in Walla Walla, Wash. to Elgin and Alpha Aichele Coffman. She grew up on a wheat and pea farm near Athena, Ore. and drove truck during the harvests. She was her class Valedictorian at McEwen High School in 1955. She graduated with a B.A. degree in education from Oregon State University, Corvallis in June 1959 and married Wendell Hoag at the Athena First Christian Church in August 1959. They were later divorced in 1987.

Jane's life-long career was teaching mathematics and assisting her students in the Seattle Public Schools. She taught for many years at Thompson Junior High School and later at Ballard High School. Among her thousands of students were her two daughters and stepson.

Jane was a kind, generous, and patient friend, parent, and teacher, and she had a positive influence on her colleagues and students. She taught her children the value of hard work and persistence, (traits she learned from her German-American and Germans-from-Russia extended family), to enjoy life, and encouraged them to learn musical instruments and participate in school and community activities. The family expresses profound thanks to the many health care professionals who assisted Jane to live an independent life.

Jane is survived by her father Elgin Coffman of Milton-Freewater, OR; daughter and daughter-in-law, Samara Hoag and Jeanne Dorn of Seattle, WA; daughter and son-in-law Corolla Hoag and Kevin Horstman of Tucson, AZ; son and daughter-in-law Calyx and Barb Hoag of Bellingham, WA and her beloved grandchildren Ann, April Jane, and Sage Hoag of Bellingham. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Alpha Coffman and her sister, Jo Ann Ryan, both of Athena.

Family and friends are invited to attend Jane's memorial service at the Athena Christian Church on Sunday, October 14 at 2:30 p.m. with a graveside ceremony to follow at the Athena Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be given to the Kidney Auxiliary (KAPS) c/o Puget Sound Kidney Center, 21309 44th Ave W, Montlake Terrace, WA 98043 (425) 744-1095.
Jane was sentimental about many things in her early life. I'm still working through boxes of school photos, McEwen HS albums, newspaper clippings, bank statements from the Athena Bank, and even her first pay stubs. She worked part time at the Gem Theater in Athena from March 1-December 31, 1955 for $0.65/hr. Her take-home monthly pay for working 42-78 hours was $26.47 to $48.87. She worked part time at the Athena Branch of the United States National Bank of Portland (Oregon) from December 1954 to July 1955. Her biweekly pay ranged from $4.27 to $82.27 after old age benefit, state tax, and withholding tax.
