Eddie Bricker was in tenth grade at Petoskey High School. Classes at PHS had just begun. He walked by the window of the Flat-Iron Building near the corner of Mitchell and Howard. Three girls were sitting at an ice cream table at Van’s News. He caught their eye and waved. They smiled and giggled and watched Eddie walk toward his home on W. Lake.
They were ninth graders––pretty girls sipping cherry cokes and taking inventory of the latest crop of football players. Little did they know that within hours, six of the players would be in a tragic accident.
That night around 10 p. m. the boys were headed north. When they failed to make the curve at US-31* and Division, they crashed into a tree and through the Bay View Golf Course chain link fence.
The following morining everyone was in shock. It was the saddest day most students in Petoskey High School, had ever experienced. A day or so later, the entire high school closed for Eddie Brickers funeral at Sone's Funeral Home. Back in those days, Stone's was in downtown, Petoskey, at 523 Mitchell Street (next to the Presbyterian Church).
When the Rev. Titus was done speaking, the kids moved outside and stood like brave little soldiers––grim and silent––linning the sidewalk while the pall bearers carried Eddie down the steps toward the hearse. For many it was the first funeral they had ever attended, particularly, for a kid their own age.
Now, after all these years, much of the detail has faded from memory. But not that of Eddie's father standing on the porch watching his son being lowered into the hearse. With family by his side, and handkerchief in hand, he was openly weeping.
* In 1958, Bay View Road was Highway US-131. Today it is US-31.
