Born in Iowa, third child of six, married Terry Lyons Hays, April 20, 1916 and two children Helen Louise Hays Nordyke and Lola Hays Schab, moved with family from Iowa as a child on a covered wagon. Presbyterian, teacher, farmer's wife. As a child she lived with her family in Greenbrier Township, Green County, Iowa for awhile. She was a faithful Christian, reading the entire Bible the and doing Bible Studies. She often quoted Bible Verses in her final days. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She loved fruit and vegetables, and always a great cook for her family. She crocheted and quilted many items, often giving them as gifts when friends and family were wed, had babies, or special events. Always wore an apron in the kitchen and made the best sugar cookies, molasses cookies and egg noodles.

Funeral Services at the Amoret Presbyterian Church, then Mulberry Presbyterian Church (was just West of the Cemetery in 1968 and later moved to the historic Adrian town), then Internment at the Mulberry Cemetery.

Mrs. Orla Hays, Orla Fern Sergent Hays daughter of Party Alice Sergent and Mary Ann Powell Sergent, was born near Jefferson, Iowa, November 27, 1895 and departed this life August 16, 1968 at the age of 72 years, eight months and 20 days at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri.
Orla, with her family moved to Missouri in 1904 where she attended school at the Mulberry and was a member of the first graduation class of Amoret High School in 1914. After further schooling at Warrensburg, she taught two years in the Amoret primary grades. She also taught at the Mulberry School (one room school house).
At an early age, she professed her faith in Christ and was a faithful worker in many departments of her church, including teaching, pianist and church treasurer. She was a faithful and full member of the United Presbyterian church at Amoret, Missouri. She was privileged to attend the National Presbyterial in Washington, D.C. in 1941 and was president of the Kansas City Presbyterial Missionary Society for two years.
On April 16, 1916 Terry L. Hays and Orla Fern Sergent were united in holy matrimony by the Reverend C.A. Pollock at the home of her parents. She was a devoted and loving mother to the two girls born of this union, Lola Lorraine Schab of Hansen, Idaho and Helen Louise Nordyke of Raytown, Missouri. She will be greatly missed, also by her three grandchildren, Alvin Nordyke, Terry Louise Schab and Carol Ann Nordyke.
Mrs. Hays was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Terry L. Hays in 1966 and a brother, Clarence A. Sergent in 1967. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Lola Morwood and Mrs Gladeus Anderson and one brother, Elmo Sergent, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral Services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. from the Amoret United Presbyterian Church with Dr. James Sangster officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford sand "What a Friend" and "Does Jesus Care". They were accompanied by Mrs. Jimmy Booth. Bearers were Bert Jones, Homer Dixon, David Hamilton, Nelson Cole, Bloice Nelson and Elvis Steele.
Interment was in Mulberry Cemetery.
Among those from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Anderson of Memphis, Tenn. and Mrs. D.W. Shannon of Parkville, Missouri.

Orla resided in her own home in Amoret until the last week of her life.

The Sergent families have had a long association with the Amoret and the Mulberry Churches. Mary Ann Sergent and her family were active members of the Amoret United Presbyterian Church for many years. Orla and Terry were church officers, Orla made crocheted doily piano and communion table coverings and in 1964 Orla became the first female trustee of the church.

Wonderful daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, christian, friend, a farmer's wife and devoted faithfully to God and her family.

She had Dark Brown Hair and Brown Eyes

She was the organist for her church, the Presbyterian Church of Amoret, Missouri.

She helped raise her younger sister, Gladeus, whom considered Orla not only a sister, but a second mom.

She attended the Presbyterian Conference in Washington, D.C. to represent her church.

Orla was the organ player for the Amoret Presbyterian Church for many years until her death.

"A very quiet but very pretty wedding took place last Thursday evening at six o'clock at the residence of the bride's parents when Miss Orla Sergent and Mr. Terry Hays were united in marriage. Both the bride and groom are well known in this community and are recognized as young people of sterling character. The groom's sister, Mrs. Charles Fyke, of Fairfield, Nebraska, acted as a bridesmaid and the bride's brother, Mr. Clarence A. Sergent was best man, the ceremony was performed by Rev. C.A.Pollack. After the ceremony the dining, room doors were thrown open and a bountiful dinner was served. The newly married couple have gone to house keeping in their home one mile north of town. It is interesting to know the Miss Sergent was married on the 26th wedding anniversary of her parents."

Newspaper, Butler Weekly, Butler, Bates, Missouri 13 March 1913 "Mrs. Myrtle Welton, and Misses Stella Nichols and Orla Sargent attended the teachers' examination at Butler Friday and Saturday.
Orla was a school teacher at Amoret School before she was wed.

Newspaper:" The Butler Weekly Times, 1916 April 27: "Terry Hays and Orla Sargent were married at the bride's parents home in Amoret Thursday evening. The bride has been one of Amoret's popular teachers for the past two years. The groom is the only son of P.B. Hays. They will make their home on a farm one mile north of Amoret."

Note: Orla was married once and to Terry Lyons Hays. They only had 2 children Lola and Helen. Terry was only married once and to Orla Fern Sergent Hays. One genealogy site stated Helen had another sister Lucinda who is not a sister, but a cousin through Terry's sister's family line. Orla transferred her membership from the Mulberry Church to the Presbyterian Church in Amoret in 1915.

Orla and Terry farmed and lived in Linn County Kansas (Boicourt) after they were married. After Terry's father died they moved back to live with his mother and help her. That was the property in Homer Township, Amoret, Bates County, Missouri that he was born on. They lived in the home and raised their two children in the home. Their two daughters, Lola and Helen were born in the same house he was born in. Then in 1948 they built a new home on the property next to the old home, removing most of the original building. The two room home remaining was torn down in 1970. Both Terry and Orla lived in the new home in Amoret until the last week of their lives when they needed medical care. They were dedicated farmers, family members and Christians. He loved farming and keeping a clean farm. She loved gardening and serving her church.
