Edward R. Jones, 68, of Nelson, passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. He was born February 18, 1942 in Ravenna, Ohio to Ralph E. and Alma (Newcomb) Jones. Ed was a lifetime resident of Nelson, a 1960 graduate of James A. Garfield High School, and a U.S. Army veteran. He had worked for The Prudential Insurance Company and retired from Hiram College Physical Plant where he worked in maintenance. Besides his beloved Wednesday Night Poker Club, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the casinos, any activity in the woods, and spending time with his extended family and friends.

He first married Patricia Rhodes on October 1, 1965. Later divorced. He is survived by his wife, Iris (Drake) Jones, whom he married in 1983; mother, Alma (Newcomb) Jones both of Nelson; children, Jennifer (Scott) Hutchinson of West Jordan, UT, Amy (Roger) Smith of Provo, UT, Steven (Christine) Jones of Salisbury, NC, step-daughters Deanna White of Newton Falls,and Stacey (Erik) Gustafson of Norwood, MA; brothers, Henry (Carole) Jones of Niles, OH, and Howard (Glenna) Jones of Southington; sister, Peggy Theriot (Allen Boros) of Ravenna; brother-in-law, Thomas (Dorothy) Drake of Morgantown, WV; sisters-in-law, Gracie Drake, Pat Tennant and Beulah Drake; grandchildren, Audrey, Adam, Rachel, and Megan Smith; Tyler and Allison Jones, step-grandchildren Jamie, Phillip and Andrew Gustafson,and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph E. Jones; brothers-in-law, Paul, Gail and Roy Drake; sister-in-law, Angie Drake; uncle and aunt, Harry and Mary Jones; cousin, James Jones and nephew, Jeffrey Jones.

Calling hours are 6-8 PM on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231 where funeral services will be at 11 AM on Friday with Rev. Rick Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Harrington Cemetery in Nelson Twp. with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nelson United Methodist Church, PO Box 210, Garrettsville, OH 44231.


Although the military plaque on his stone says he served in Vietnam, Edward actually served in the Army in Germany.
