Mable Alston Bessellieu died of natural causes at her home in Pawleys Island, SC on February 18, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Pawleys Island, SC under the direction of Wilds Funeral Home. Burial follows at the church cemetery. Visitation will take place on Monday from 6pm to 8pm at th Wilds Courtyard Chapel, Georgetown.
Mrs. Besselieu was born on August 12, 1912 in the Waverly Mills area of Pawley Island. She was the youngest of six children of the marital union between Samuel Alston and Sally Walker Alston.
Her marriage to the Rev. G.W. Bessellieu was blessed with the births and rearing of twelve children. Her husband, siblings, and two children, Rev. Sydney M. Bessellieu and Catherine B. Thompson, all preceded her in death.
She was a long time member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Pastor's Aide Board, Senior Missionary Auxilary, and Ministers' Wives and Widows Auxiliary. During the forty-one year pastorate of her husband, she was a devoted First Lady of the Church and in 2007 was honored as "Mother Of The Year."
Suriving are ten children, Ruthena Alston, Anna B. Thompson, Geraldine B. Hughes, Verbatine B. Johnson, Sarah L. Bessellieu, Gwendolyn B. Coleman, Margaretta B. Bonds, Truman L. Bessellieu, Carolyn B. Williams and Vera B. Curry; twenty four grandchildren, forty three great grandchildren, two great-great grand children, six sons-in-law, and two daughters -in-law.
