Walter C. Zwierzynski
Mar. 25, 1944 - Sept. 22, 2010

MISHAWAKA - Walter C. Zwierzynski, 66 of Winding Brook Dr. Mishawaka, died at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at home with his family after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Walter was born in South Bend on March 25, 1944 to Rose and Ted Zwierzynski and was a lifelong area resident.

He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara A. (Rodick), his father Ted Zwierzynski, and his two brothers Steven and Ted Zwierzynski Jr.

Walter married Barbara A. Rodick in South Bend on June 19, 1965.

He is survived by his mother, Rose (Bagarus) Zwierzynski. He is also survived by three daughters and twelve grandchildren: Kimberly Michael of Mishawaka and daughters Ashley, Alecia, Kaitlyn, and Kassidy; Jodi and husband Perry Tirotta of Granger and children Dominick, Nicholas, Isabella, Angelina, and Anthony; Hope and husband Bill Ragsdale of Granger and daughters Tiffany, Faith, and Olivia.

Walter is also survived by his two sisters Rosalle (Les) Galloway and Suzanne (Rich) Montalvo and his two brothers Ted (Charlotte) Zwierzynski and Donald Zwierzynski.

Walter's work ethics, selflessness, and giving personality are an inspiration to all of us. He will be missed terribly by so many, especially his daughters and grandchildren.

Walter owned several Michiana businesses. In the early 1970's Walt established and owned Walt Shell Service Station on Western and Mayflower in South Bend. In the early 1980's Walt opened the Zwierzynski Marathon on McKinley and Ironwood and K&J's Marathon in Mishawaka. Other area businesses included Roseland Marathon Carwash, Comet Carwash, and McKinley Automotive. After retiring for a short period of time in 2005, Walter began working for the St. Joseph County Commissioners and eventually also took a position as a paraprofessional for the South Bend School Corporation. He continued to work throughout the end of May, while battling stage four colon cancer for almost three years.

We are so proud of you Dad. You are in a happier place with mom now. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, where visitation will also be on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Monsignor William Schooler will officiate the services with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church. Bubb Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
