Immigrated to the U.S. from Scotland in 1882, he was Superintendent of a coal mine in Priceburg, Lackawanna County, Penna. He married Katherine "Kate" Condon in 1893 and they had two children together: William (b-1897) and Mabel (b-1901). He became a citizen of the U.S. on January 12, 1904 at Priceburg (now Dickson City), Penna.
