In 1855 they purchased 400 acres of farm land, starting what would become the Coats Farm near Wilbarger Creek in Bastrop County (Deed records Bastrop County Courthouse). Along with the Coats family were the Gresham, Hill, and Rivers families, all coming from Wilkes Co., Georgia.
