Richard T. Brown was 21, and living in Charleston, Lee Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. F of the 1st Iowa Infantry on April 23, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on May 14, 1861. He mustered out at St. Louis on Aug 21, 1861, at the end of his enlistment period.

Brown, now at age 22, and living in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, enlisted for a second time, this time in Co. C of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 1, 1862.

During his term of service with the 4th Iowa, Brown was promoted to 6th Corporal on Nov 21, 1862; to 5th Corporal on Jan 1, 1863; to 4th Corporal on June 10, 1863; reduced to Private on Sept 1, 1863; promoted to 8th Corporal on Oct 22, 1864; and finally to 7th Corporal on May 18, 1865.

Brown was mustered out of the service at Nashville on June 17, 1865, as the term of his enlistment was due to expire prior to Oct 1st.
