O. E. Clauson passed away at his home in town at 3 pm Thursday August 31, after a lingering illness. Mr. Clauson's health had been failing him for nearly a year although it was only recently that he was confined to his bed. Towards the end he has suffered a great deal but was very patient. He was given the tenderest care by his wife and dear ones to relieve him from his pains.
Otto E. Clauson was the youngest living son of Carl and Kathryn Clauson, (deceased). He was one of the fourteen children of this family. He was born August 9, 1876 on the old Clauson homestead in Stockholm township where he grew to manhood and received his education in the district schools. At the age of eighteen he began his farming career of himself. In the year 1901 he was married to Miss Emma Lundberg. This union was blessed with three children, two of whom died in infancy and Leslie Clauson of Cedar Rapids. Shortly after the death of his wife in 1904 he retired from farming and moved to Kiron where he was partner in business with his brother E. E. Clauson for a number of years. On August 3, 1905 he was united in marriage at Denison to Miss Alfena Lilliholm of Denison and since then they have continued to make their home in Kiron during which time he was druggist here for a number of years, and of late years has been associated with the Town Mutual Dwelling Insurance Co. out of Des Moines.
Mr. Clauson was a highly esteemed citizen, interested in the welfare of his fellowmen and the community at large. He served on the local school board for a long period of time and has faithfully served on the fire department since shortly after its organization. He was keenly interested in political affairs and has held the office of mayor for several terms and also a member of the city council for a number of terms. He was staunch friend to his associates, congenial and pleasant to all whom he met. He was a loyal husband and father and beloved by his great circle of relatives and friends.
Besides his bereaved wife he leaves to mourn his departure, his only son, Leslie M. Clauson of Cedar Rapids. Two grandchildren, Bonita and Boyd Clauson, three brothers, Alfred J. of Stockholm township, and E. E. Clauson of Kiron and one sister, Mrs. Ida Anderson of Otter Creek township, nine brothers and sisters preceded him in death. Besides these he leaves a large number of other relatives and host of friends. He had reached the age of 57 years and 22 days. He lived his entire life in Crawford County.
Funeral services were held from the Ev. Free Mission church on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. H. A. Faugerstrom assisted by Rev. J. C. Cedergren. A vocal duet was sung by Myrtle and Ellen Nelson and one by Milton Swanson and Glenn Goetsch of Odebolt. The high esteem for the departed brother was shown by the many beautiful floral offerings. He was borne to his last resting place by six nephews, Paul Cedergren, Newell and Stanley Clauson, Walter Anderson, Eldon Clauson and Albin Malinquist. Interment was made in the Kiron Cemetery. Peace be to his memory.
