Jerry Bowers , 73, of Stuart, FL died of a sudden illness on June 17, 2003 in Martin Memorial Medical Center South.

Born October 12, 1929, Bowers had lived in Stuart since 1968.

He was widely known in the community largely as a result of his career as a journalist. That career originated in his Iowa boyhood with his family newspaper, the Alton Democrat.

He was one of seven children born to George, the publisher, and Clara Bowers , and all seven worked at the Democrat, eventually published by the Bowers family for three generations.

He majored in journalism at Marquette University where he edited the college newspaper and from which he graduated with highest honors. He also took a short course in typesetting at the University of Iowa.

From college, he immediately enlisted in the army and served as a journalist and photographer for military publications in Japan and Korea.

In 1955, after spending a short time as a reporter on the newspaper in Rock Rapids, IA, Bowers moved to Florida with his new wife, June, also an Iowan, first settling in Lake Wales where he was managing editor of the Daily Highlander. Upon his 1968 move to Stuart, he became Martin County bureau chief for the Miami Herald.

In 1976, he left the Herald to run unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress as a Democrat. The campaign increased his visibility in the community, and after the election, in 1977, he started a live program of local news on cable television. The program was a homey one, featuring volunteers including his daughters as weather reporters and his sons as camera operators. Bowers did a fishing report on the program almost daily.

Before his retirement, he also worked at the Fort Pierce News Tribune.

June Bowers , a notable regional artist, died in April 1999, and on February 2, 2002 Bowers married the former Camille Schoenfelder. He frequently remarked subsequently that he was "working hard at having fun."

His wife June and his brothers Jim (Lieut James Robison "Big Jim" Bowers), Bill and Frank predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife, Camille; by two daughters, Patricia Houston of Stuart and Anne Tilton of Gainesville, FL; by two sons, Robert of San Diego, CA and Thomas of New South Wales, Australia; by one brother, John, of Bend, OR; by two sisters, Ceci Hentges of Alton, IA and Mesa, AZ and Susan Willer of Cave Creek, AZ; and by 3 grandchildren, Jonathan Houston of Stuart, Mariah and Christian Bowers of NSW, Australia.

Those who wish to do so may contribute to St. Joseph's Carpenter's Kitchen, 1200 10th St, Stuart 34996

Visitation will be Sunday, June 22, 2003 from 3:00-5:00PM with prayer service at 4:30pm at All County Funeral Home & Crematory Treasure Coast Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Stuart, FL at 10:00am
