NEWPORT - A.J. "Buddy" Goodwin, 79, of Jonesboro, formerly of Newport, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in Memphis.

Born July 8, 1923, in Moorefield, he was the son of William Franklin and Mary Elisabeth Halsey Goodwin. He married Jane Allen Williams on March 23, 1961. He was a self-employed barber who owned and operated Buddy's Barber Shop in Newport for 55 years until he and his wife moved to Jonesboro in December 2001. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and served with the 154th Bushmasters Infantry from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Collier-Massey Post No. 4683 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Newport. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Dr. David Goodwin; two daughters, Terry Jane Goodwin Jones and Kristina Susanne Goodwin Long; three grandchildren, Andrea Michelle Goodwin, Johnathan Andrew Goodwin and Brynn Elyse Long; two sisters, Emma Willene Barnett of Taylor, Mich., and Nina Mae "Jenny" Sprick of North Little Rock.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Billy Ed Morris and Paul Evins officiating. Burial will be in Rehobeth Cemetery at Moorefield.

Pallbearers will be Larry Scott Goodwin, Mike Morrison, Brad George, Jay Simmons, Bob Allen and Richard Thurman.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight.
