The 1850 census shows her household:

Mary Ayres 54
David Ayres 21
John W Ayres 19
James S Ayres 16 [Jairus S. -?]
Oliver Nichols 10
Grove S Nichols 6

The Nichols children were born in MI but no other information is given regarding their relationship.
There is a Joseph Nichols, age 4, b. OH, living several several households away with the John Keller family,
Antha B. Nichols, 8, b. Mi, with the Harlin Bixby family, Tyler Nichols, 3, b. OH, in the household of Rhoda Fish.

If they were orphaned, I find no Nichols grave on this site that might have been a parent that died before 1850 in Cass County. Reviewing this, 20 Jul 2023, as the 2 youngest Nichols children were b. OH, perhaps that is where the parent(s) died. All of these families are on the same page of the 1850 census along with the household of Samuel Cox, my gg grandfather.

I speculate that James S. Ayres, b. abt 1836 in NY is
really Jairus S. Ayres. Who is buried with other Ayerses in this same cemetery.

=============================

The 1900 census shows Minar Lamb living with Jairus Sylvester Ayres, relationship: cousin. Jairus likely named for Uncle Jairus Lamb, Minar's father; so possibly Jairus' mother was a Lamb- or a Minar. Same census: Jairus S's father b. Vermont, mother b.New York
