The son of Benjamin & Elizabeth Menges (Smith) Ziegler, in 1860 he was a brick maker living in York Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. K, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861. His last name is on the roster as "Zercher." He then enlisted in York August 19, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 25 as a private with Co. A, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to corporal March 8, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865. His obituary in the York Daily of April 3, 1907, erroneously claims he served with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry.

He married Amanda lnu. (but possibly Ziegler as well) and died in the York County Almshouse from "apoplexy."
